Friends Say the Tough Stuff…So Say It
In response to recent reports of dating abuse on college campuses, Confidence Coalition founder Kappa Delta Sorority joined forces with coalition partners, the National Domestic Violence Hotline, and loveisrespect, the National Teen Dating Abuse Helpline, to launch an awareness campaign called, “Friends Say the Tough Stuff…So Say It.” The campaign encourages friends to offer support, advice and intervention when they believe a friend is in an unhealthy relationship.
According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline:
- One in 3 teens report knowing a friend or peer who has been hit, punched, slapped, choked or physically hurt by his/her partner.
- On the average, more than three women are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends every day.
- 92% of women say that reducing domestic violence and sexual assault should be at the top of any formal efforts taken on behalf of women today.
Women friends play important roles in each others’ lives. They offer the support to make difficult decisions and give each other the confidence to stand up for themselves.
You can make a difference in the life of a friend when you “say the tough stuff.”
How you can help:
- Hang posters around campus and the community;
- Send a Letter to the Editor to your campus newspaper or community newspaper;
- Ask the newspaper to run an ad about the campaign;
- Place table tents on tables in the library, cafeteria and other common areas;
- Hand out flyers at an event or set up a table outside the women’s center on campus or a central place in your community;
- Make t-shirts for your group to wear and bring attention to the cause.
